How to Automate Pump Bottle Packaging

Pump bottles are widely used for shampoo, lotion, hand soap, sanitizer, cosmetics, and household liquids. Compared with standard screw-cap bottles, automating pump bottle packaging is more challenging because the pump usually includes a long dip tube and an irregularly shaped pump head.

A well-designed automatic line must therefore coordinate filling, pump feeding, insertion, capping, and labeling as one continuous process.

Typical Pump Bottle Packaging Process

A complete automatic pump bottle packaging line usually follows:

Bottle Unscrambling → Filling → Pump Feeding → Pump Insertion → Capping → Labeling → Coding / Collection

1. Automatic Bottle Feeding

An automatic bottle unscrambler or rotary feeding table supplies empty bottles continuously to the conveyor.

The feeding system should match the bottle shape and production speed to maintain stable downstream operation.

2. Accurate Liquid Filling

The filling machine should be selected according to product characteristics.

  • Servo piston filling – suitable for lotions, creams, shampoo, and viscous products
  • Pump filling – suitable for liquid soaps, sanitizers, and other free-flowing liquids
  • Multi-head filling – suitable for higher production capacities

For foaming products, diving or specially designed filling nozzles can help reduce bubbles and splashing.

3. Automatic Pump Feeding & Insertion

This is one of the most important stages of pump bottle automation.

A pump feeding system sorts and delivers pumps to the insertion station. The machine then positions the pump and guides the dip tube into the bottle opening.

Because pump dimensions and dip tube lengths vary, this section often requires customization according to the actual pump and bottle samples.

4. Automatic Pump Capping

After insertion, the pump cap is tightened automatically.

The capping system should provide sufficient torque while avoiding damage to the pump head or bottle. Depending on the packaging format, spindle capping, servo capping, or customized gripping mechanisms can be used.

5. Labeling and Coding

After capping, bottles can move directly to an automatic labeling machine.

Depending on the bottle design, the line may use:

  • Wrap-around labeling
  • Front and back labeling
  • Positioning labeling

Date coding, batch coding, inspection, and bottle collection can also be integrated.

How to Choose the Right Pump Bottle Packaging Line

Before designing the line, several factors should be confirmed:

Factor What to Check
Product Liquid, lotion, shampoo, cream, etc.
Viscosity Determines the filling system
Bottle Shape, diameter, height and material
Pump Pump type, cap size and orientation
Dip Tube Diameter, length and flexibility
Output Required bottles per minute
Label Label type and positioning requirements

Why Pump Bottle Lines Often Need Customization

Unlike standard bottle-and-cap packaging, pump bottles can vary significantly in pump shape, dip tube length, bottle neck size, and orientation requirements.

For this reason, an effective pump bottle line should be designed around the actual packaging components rather than simply combining standard machines.

ZONESUN can integrate bottle feeding, filling, pump feeding, pump insertion, capping, labeling, and coding into a customized automatic packaging line based on your bottle, pump, product, and target production capacity.
