Packaging Line FAT Checklist: What to Check Before Shipment
Before an automatic packaging line leaves the manufacturer’s factory, a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) helps verify that the complete system meets the agreed specifications and production requirements.
For customized filling and packaging lines, FAT is especially important because multiple machines must operate together as one system.
What Is FAT for a Packaging Line?
A Factory Acceptance Test is performed after the packaging line has been assembled and commissioned, but before shipment.
The goal is to confirm that the equipment can process the customer’s actual or representative products, containers, caps, labels, cartons, and other packaging materials under realistic production conditions.
Packaging Line FAT Checklist
1. Machine Configuration
Confirm that the complete line matches the approved configuration, including:
- Filling, capping, labeling and packaging equipment
- Conveyor systems and transfer mechanisms
- Sensors and control systems
- Optional or customized components
2. Packaging Material Compatibility
Test the line using representative production materials whenever possible:
Product → Container → Cap/Closure → Label → Carton/Case
Check that different formats can move smoothly through each process without excessive adjustment or damage.
3. Production Process
Run the complete line continuously and verify every production step.
For a typical bottling line:
Bottle Feeding → Filling → Capping → Labeling → Coding → Case Packing → Sealing
The focus should be on the complete workflow, rather than testing each machine independently.
4. Performance Verification
Check the key production requirements:

5. Line Synchronization

- Frequent machine stops
The slowest or least stable process often determines the real output of the entire line.
6. Safety & Control System
Verify basic safety and operating functions, including emergency stops, safety guards, alarms, sensors, touchscreen controls, and parameter settings.
Operators should also be able to start, stop, adjust, and troubleshoot the line easily.
7. Final Documentation
Before shipment, confirm that relevant documentation is available, such as operating instructions, electrical information, recommended spare parts, and FAT test records.
