What Samples Are Needed for a Custom Packaging Line?

Building a reliable custom packaging line starts long before machine production. To select the right filling, capping, sealing, and labeling systems, the machine manufacturer needs actual production samples for testing.

Providing complete samples helps verify compatibility, identify potential handling problems, and reduce adjustment time during factory acceptance testing.

1. Product Samples

The product determines the filling principle, contact materials, cleaning method, and dosing system. Please provide the actual material whenever possible, especially for:

  • Foaming liquids
  • Thick sauces and pastes
  • Liquids containing particles
  • Corrosive chemicals
  • Hot-fill products
  • Products sensitive to temperature or contamination

Important information should include viscosity, density, particle size, filling temperature, target volume, and cleaning requirements.

2. Bottles and Containers

Bottle samples are required to test conveying, positioning, filling, capping, and labeling.

Please provide every container size and shape that will run on the line, including:

  • Empty bottles, jars, tubes, cups, or vials
  • Different volumes and formats
  • Containers made from different materials
  • Transparent, soft, irregular, or unstable containers
  • Maximum and minimum container sizes

A dimensioned drawing is helpful, but physical samples provide more reliable results.

3. Caps, Pumps, and Closures

Closures directly affect the design of the cap feeder, cap placement system, and capping mechanism. Samples may include:

  • Screw caps
  • Pump heads
  • Trigger sprayers
  • Dropper caps
  • Press-on caps
  • Corks or stoppers
  • Aluminum caps
  • Inner plugs and outer caps

If one container uses multiple closure types, samples of every combination should be supplied.

4. Labels and Packaging Materials

Labels must be tested for feeding, positioning, detection, and adhesion. Please provide:

  • Self-adhesive labels
  • Front and back labels
  • Wraparound labels
  • Transparent labels
  • Tamper-evident labels
  • Shrink sleeves
  • Cartons, films, trays, or cases

Final-production materials are preferable because changes in thickness, stiffness, surface finish, or adhesive can affect machine performance.

5. How Many Samples Should Be Provided?

The required quantity depends on the machine and testing scope. As a general reference:

  • Bottles or containers: 50–100 pieces per format
  • Caps or closures: 100–200 pieces per type
  • Labels: 1–2 complete rolls per size
  • Product material: enough for repeated filling and cleaning tests
  • Cartons or films: enough for continuous trial operation

High-speed lines or complex packaging formats may require larger quantities.

6. What Will Be Tested?

The samples are used to confirm:

  • Filling accuracy and product flow
  • Bottle stability during conveying
  • Cap feeding and placement reliability
  • Capping torque and sealing quality
  • Label position and application accuracy
  • Changeover requirements
  • Line speed and synchronization
  • Cleaning and product-contact suitability
  • Finished-package appearance

These tests help determine whether custom guides, star wheels, nozzles, fixtures, sensors, or change parts are required.

Send Final Production Samples Whenever Possible

Prototype samples can support initial engineering, but final production samples should be provided before machine completion. Even small changes in bottle dimensions, cap tolerances, label materials, or product viscosity may affect line performance.

If final samples are not yet available, provide drawings, specifications, photos, videos, and supplier information so the engineering team can begin evaluating the project.
